Sahih Muslim 1958b (Book 34, Hadith 91) #12167
The Prohibition of Using Living Creatures as Targets

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the prohibition of using living creatures as targets for marksmanship.

Sa'id b. Jubair reported that Ibn 'Umar happened to pass by some young men of the Quraish who had tied a bird (and th, is made it a target) at which they had been shooting arrows Every arrow that they missed came into the possession of the owner of the bird. So no sooner did they see Ibn 'Umar they went away. Thereupon Ibn 'Umar said: Who has done this? Allah has cursed him who does this. Verily Allah's Messenger invoked curse upon one who made a live thing the target (of one's marksmanship).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the prohibition of using living creatures as targets for marksmanship. It was narrated by Sa'id b. Jubair, who reported that Ibn 'Umar happened to pass by some young men of the Quraish who had tied a bird and made it a target at which they were shooting arrows. Every arrow that they missed came into the possession of the owner of the bird, so when they saw Ibn 'Umar, they went away immediately. Upon seeing this, Ibn 'Umar asked who did this and said that Allah has cursed him who does this because Allah's Messenger invoked curse upon one who made a live thing a target for their marksmanship practice. This hadith teaches us to be mindful and respectful towards all living creatures and not use them as targets or objects for our own amusement or pleasure without considering their feelings or rights in any way whatsoever.
