Sahih Muslim 1947 (Book 34, Hadith 68) #12144
Eating on the Table of the Prophet

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that if something is eaten on the table of the Prophet, then it is permissible to eat.

Sa'id b. Jubair reported that he heard Ibn 'Abbas says: The sister of my mother Umm Hufaid presented to Allah's Messenger clarified butter (ghee), cheese and some lizards. He ate out of the clarified butter and cheese, but left the lizard finding no liking for it. But it was eaten on the table of Allah's Messenger . Had it been forbidden (haram), it could not be eaten on the table of Allah's Messenger .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that if something is eaten on the table of Prophet Muhammad, then it is permissible to eat. It teaches us that we should not judge things as haram or halal without proper knowledge and understanding. The hadith also shows us how careful and mindful Prophet Muhammad was in his actions, as he did not consume something he found no liking for even though it was served on his table. We can learn from this example to be mindful in our own actions and decisions, especially when it comes to food consumption. Furthermore, this hadith also teaches us about respect for others’ opinions and choices; even though Prophet Muhammad did not like lizards himself, he still allowed them to be consumed by others at his table without any judgement or criticism.
