Sahih Muslim 1937b (Book 34, Hadith 40) #12116
Prohibiting Eating Domestic Asses

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the prohibition of eating the flesh of domestic asses and how some people believed it was only for one-fifth due to the State not being paid, while others believed it was prohibited forever.

Sulaiman Shaibini reported: I heard Abdullah b. Abu Aufa say: We were smitten with hunger during the nights of Khaibar. On the Day of Khaibar, we fell upon domestic asses and we slaughtered them, and when our earthen pots boiled with them, the announcer of Allah's Messenger made an announcement that the earthen pots should be turned over, and nothing should be eaten of the flesh of the domestic asses. Some of the people said that Allah's Messenger had forbidden (the use of this flesh) for one-fifth (due to the State) has not been paid, while others said: He prohibited it for ever.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a situation that occurred during the nights of Khaibar when people were smitten with hunger. People fell upon domestic asses and slaughtered them, and when their earthen pots boiled with them, an announcement was made that nothing should be eaten from this flesh. Some people said that Allah's Messenger prohibited it for one fifth due to the State not being paid, while others said He prohibited it forever. This hadith teaches us that we should always follow what Allah's Messenger has commanded us to do even if we don't understand why at first because He knows best what is good for us in this life and in the hereafter. We must also be mindful of our actions as they can have consequences on our lives both now and later on.
