Sahih Muslim 1907a (Book 33, Hadith 222) #12032
Intention Determines Reward

SUMMARY: The value of an action is determined by the intention behind it, and a person will be rewarded for what they intended.

It has been narrated on the authority of Umar b. al-Khattab that the Messenger of Allah said: (The value of) an action depends on the intention behind it. A man will be rewarded only for what he intended. The emigration of one who emigrates for the sake of Allah and His Messenger is for the sake of Allah and His Messenger ; and the emigration of one who emigrates for gaining a worldly advantage or for marrying a woman is for what he has emigrated.

QUICK LESSONS:
Have good intentions when performing any actions

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of intention in determining the reward for an action. It teaches us that our intentions are important when we do something and that we will only be rewarded for what we intended to do. For example, if someone emigrates from their home country with the intention of seeking Allah's pleasure and His Messenger's pleasure then they will receive a reward from Allah for this act. However, if someone emigrates with the intention of gaining a worldly advantage or marrying a woman then they will only receive a reward based on their intentions in doing so. This hadith reminds us to always have good intentions when performing any action as it is these intentions which determine our ultimate reward from Allah.
