Sahih Muslim 1906b (Book 33, Hadith 221) #12031
Rewards for Soldiers Who Fight in the Way of Allah

SUMMARY: A troop of soldiers who fight in the way of Allah and return safe and sound will receive two-thirds of their reward in advance, while a troop who return empty-handed or wounded will receive their full reward in the Hereafter.

It has been narrated on the authority of Abdullah b. Amr (through a different chain of transmitters) that the Messenger of Allah said: A troop of soldiers, large or small, who fight (in the way of Allah), get their share of the booty and return safe and sound, receive in advance two-thirds of their reward (only one-third remaining to their credit to be received in the Hereafter) ; and a troop of soldiers, large or small, who return empty-handed and are afflicted or wounded, will receive their full reward (in the Hereafter).

QUICK LESSONS:
Fight courageously for Allah's cause
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about rewards for soldiers who fight in the way of Allah. It is narrated on the authority of Abdullah b. Amr that Prophet Muhammad said that a troop of soldiers who fight and return safe and sound will receive two-thirds of their reward before they reach the Hereafter. On the other hand, those troops which come back empty-handed or wounded will still get their full reward when they reach Heaven. This hadith teaches us to be brave and courageous even if we don't get any material gain from it because our ultimate goal should be to please Allah by doing good deeds which are rewarded by Him both here on Earth as well as in Heaven after death.
