Sahih al-Bukhari 1244 (Book 23, Hadith 7) #1199
Compassion in Grief

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) showed compassion and understanding towards Jabir bin 'Abdullah when he was grieving for his father's death.

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah: When my father was martyred, I lifted the sheet from his face and wept and the people forbade me to do so but the Prophet did not forbid me. Then my aunt Fatima began weeping and the Prophet said, "It is all the same whether you weep or not. The angels were shading him continuously with their wings till you shifted him (from the field)".

QUICK LESSONS:
Show compassion towards those who are grieving for their loved ones; Respect people’s emotions; Acknowledge grief of others; Be kind to those in pain; Appreciate Allah’s mercy on us by sending angels to shade our loved ones even after death.

EXPLANATIONS:
When Jabir bin 'Abdullah's father was martyred, he lifted the sheet from his face and wept. People around him tried to stop him from doing so, but the Prophet (ﷺ) did not forbid him. His aunt Fatima then began weeping and the Prophet (ﷺ) said that it does not matter whether they weep or not as angels were shading his father continuously with their wings until they shifted him away from the field. This hadith shows us that it is okay to grieve for our loved ones who have passed away, and that we should be compassionate towards those who are grieving. It also teaches us about Allah's mercy as He sends angels to shade our loved ones even after their death.
