Recognizing Change

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a tree that the narrator saw and was unable to recognize when he returned.

The tradition has been narrated on the authority of Sa'id b. Musayyib who learnt it from his father. The latter said: I had seen the tree. When I came to the spot afterwards, I could not recognise it.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of recognizing change in our lives. It tells us that things can change over time, and it is important to be aware of this fact. The narrator, Sa'id b. Musayyib, experienced this firsthand when he returned to a spot where he had seen a tree before but was unable to recognize it anymore due to the changes that had taken place in the meantime. This teaches us that we should always be mindful of how things can change over time and be prepared for such changes in our lives as well. We should also remember what we have seen or experienced before so that we can identify any changes if they occur later on.
