Sahih Muslim 1855a (Book 33, Hadith 101) #11911
Loving & Hating Rulers

SUMMARY: The best rulers are those who love and are loved by their people, while the worst rulers are those who hate and are hated by their people. It is not permissible to overthrow them with the sword, but it is permissible to hate their administration.

It has been narrated on the authority of 'Auf b. Malik that the Messenger of Allah said: The best of your rulers are those whom you love and who love you, who invoke God's blessings upon you and you invoke His blessings upon them. And the worst of your rulers are those whom you hate and who hate you and whom you curse and who curse you. It was asked (by those present): Shouldn't we overthrow them with the help of the sword? He said: No, as long as they establish prayer among you. If you then find anything detestable in them. You should hate their administration, but do not withdraw yourselves from their obedience.

QUICK LESSONS:
Love your ruler if they love you back; Invoke God's blessings upon your ruler; Obey your ruler even if you don't like him/her; Respect authority figures

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how we should interact with our rulers. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that the best of rulers are those whom we love and who love us in return, as well as those who invoke God's blessings upon us and we invoke His blessings upon them. On the other hand, he warned us against hating our rulers or cursing them because this would be a sign of disobedience towards Allah SWT. He also taught us that it is not permissible to overthrow a ruler with the help of a sword but rather it is better to simply hate their administration without withdrawing from obedience towards them. This hadith teaches us important values such as loyalty, respect for authority figures, patience in difficult times and obedience towards Allah SWT even when faced with an oppressive ruler.
