Sahih Muslim 1832b (Book 33, Hadith 38) #11848
Staying with Parents and Waiting for Gifts

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that it is better to stay with one's parents and wait for gifts to come, rather than going out and collecting them.

It has been reported on the authority of Abu Humaid as-Sa'idi who said: The Prophet appointed Ibn Lutbiyya, a man from the Azd tribe, in charge of Sadaqa (authorising him to receive gifts from the people on behalf of the State). He came with the collection, gave it to the Prophet , and said: This wealth is for you and this is a gift presented to me. The Prophet said to him: Why didn't you remain in the house of your father and your mother to see whether gifts were presented to you or not. Then he stood up to deliver a sermon. Here follows the tradition like the tradition of Sufyan.

QUICK LESSONS:
Stay at home with your parents and wait patiently for gifts or material possessions

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of staying with one's parents and waiting patiently for gifts to come. The Prophet Muhammad appointed Ibn Lutbiyya, a man from the Azd tribe, in charge of Sadaqa which means he was authorised to receive gifts from people on behalf of the state. When Ibn Lutbiyya came back with the collection, he gave it to the Prophet Muhammad but also said that some wealth was his own gift. To this, the Prophet replied by asking why he didn't stay at home instead and wait for gifts to come. He then stood up to deliver a sermon about this topic. This hadith teaches us that it is better to stay at home with our parents rather than going out looking for wealth or material possessions because they will eventually come if we are patient enough. It also shows us how important family values are in Islam as we should always prioritize spending time with our families over anything else in life.
