Sahih Muslim 1829a (Book 33, Hadith 24) #11834
Accountability of Actions

SUMMARY: Everyone is responsible for their own actions and will be held accountable for them.

It has been narrated on the authority of Ibn 'Umar that the Prophet (May be upon him) said: Beware. every one of you is a shepherd and every one is answerable with regard to his flock. The Caliph is a shepherd over the people and shall be questioned about his subjects (as to how he conducted their affairs). A man is a guardian over the members of his family and shal be questioned about them (as to how he looked after their physical and moral well-being). A woman is a guardian over the household of her husband and his children and shall be questioned about them (as to how she managed the household and brought up the children). A slave is a guardian over the property of his master and shall be questioned about it (as to how he safeguarded his trust). Beware, every one of you is a guardian and every one of you shall be questioned with regard to his trust.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of accountability in our lives. We are all responsible for our own actions and will be held accountable for them. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was reminding us that we are all shepherds, whether it be as a Caliph, a family member, or even a slave. We must take care of those under our charge and ensure that they are taken care of properly. We must also remember that we will be questioned about how we have managed these responsibilities and trusts given to us by Allah SWT. Therefore, it is important to always strive to do the right thing so that when the time comes, we can answer with confidence knowing that we have done our best in fulfilling these duties entrusted upon us by Allah SWT.
