Sahih Muslim 1733c (Book 33, Hadith 17) #11827
Greed and Power Seeking in Leadership

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) taught that those who seek positions of power should not be appointed, as they are likely to be greedy and selfish.

It has been narrated by Abu Musa who said: Two of my cousins and I entered the apartment of the Prophet . One of them said: Messenger of Allah, appoint us rulers of some lands that the Almighty and Glorious God has entrusted to thy care. The other also said something similar. He said: We do not appoint to this position one who asks for it nor anyone who is covetous for the same.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the qualities of a good leader. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that those who seek positions of power should not be appointed, as they are likely to be greedy and selfish. He said that it is better to appoint someone who does not ask for the position or someone who is not covetous for it. This means that a good leader should have humility and selflessness, rather than greed or ambition for power. They should also have integrity and honesty in their leadership role, so they can make decisions based on what is best for everyone rather than what will benefit them personally. Good leaders must also have strong moral values so they can lead by example and inspire others to do the same.
