Sahih Muslim 1784 (Book 32, Hadith 114) #11742
Making Peace with the Quraish

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) made a peace treaty with the Quraish, which included a clause that anyone who joined either side would not be returned.

It has been narrated on the authority of Anas that the Quraish made peace with the Prophet . Among them was Suhail b. Amr. The Prophet said to 'Ali: Write" In the name of Allah, most Gracious and most Merciful". Suhail said: As for" Bismillah," we do not know what is meant by" Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim" (In the name of Allah most Gracious and most Merciful). But write what we understand, i. e. Bismika Allahumma (in thy name. O Allah). Then, the Prophet said: Write:" From Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah". They said: If we knew that thou welt the Messenger of Allah, we would follow you. Therefore, write your name and the name of your father. So the Prophet said: Write" From Muhammad b'.Abdullah". They laid the condition on the Prophet that anyone who joined them from the Muslims, the Meccans would not return him, and anyone who joined you (the Muslims) from them, you would send him back to them. The Companions said: Messenger of Allah, should we write this? He said: Yes. One who goes away from us to join them-may Allah keep him away! and one who comes to join us from them (and is sent back) Allah will provide him relief and a way of escape.

QUICK LESSONS:
Make peace between two sides even if there are conditions attached to it; Have faith in God/Allah even when things seem difficult or uncertain; Treat those who do not share your beliefs or values kindly and respectfully despite your differences .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's peace treaty with the Quraysh tribe. The Quraysh wanted to make sure that any of their people who joined the Muslim community would not be allowed to return, and vice versa. To ensure this, they asked for Muhammad's name and his father's name to be written in the treaty. However, when it came time to write "In the Name of Allah," they refused because they did not understand what it meant. In response, Muhammad said that anyone who left them should have Allah provide them relief and a way out of their situation. This hadith teaches us about making peace between two sides even if there are conditions attached to it; as well as having faith in Allah even when things seem difficult or uncertain. It also teaches us about being patient and understanding towards those who do not share our beliefs or values; we should still treat them kindly and respectfully despite our differences.
