The Importance of Concentration During Prayer

SUMMARY: It is important to be focused and not distracted while praying.

Narrated 'Abdullah: I used to greet the Prophet while he was in prayer and he would return my greeting, but when we returned (from Ethiopia) I greeted the Prophet (while he was praying) but he did not return the greeting, and (after finishing the prayer) he said, "In the prayer one is occupied (with a more serious matter)".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of concentration during prayer. Abdullah narrated that he used to greet the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ while he was in prayer and the Prophet would return his greeting. However, when they returned from Ethiopia, Abdullah greeted the Prophet while he was praying but this time the Prophet did not return his greeting. After finishing his prayer, the Prophet explained that when one is in prayer they should be occupied with a more serious matter than responding to greetings. This hadith teaches us that we should focus on our prayers and not get distracted by anything else around us such as conversations or other activities going on at the same time. We must remember that we are communicating with Allah during our prayers and it is important for us to remain focused so we can receive His blessings and mercy.
