Sahih Muslim 1727 (Book 31, Hadith 18) #11626
Accepting Hospitality While Travelling

SUMMARY: When travelling, accept hospitality from those who offer it, but if they do not, take only what is necessary.

'Uqba b. Amir reported: We said to Allah's Messenger : You send us out and we come to the people who do not give us hospitality, so what is your opinion? Thereupon Allah's Messenger said: If you come to the people who order for you what is befitting a guest, accept it; but if they do not. take from them what befits them to give to a guest.

It encourages people to be gracious and thankful for the kindness of others when they are offered hospitality during their travels. However, if someone does not offer hospitality then one should only take what is necessary and nothing more. This hadith teaches us to be humble and respectful when we are guests in someone else's home or country. It also reminds us that we should never take advantage of someone's generosity by taking more than what is needed or expected from a guest.
