Sahih Muslim 1722g, h (Book 31, Hadith 7) #11615
Handling Stray Items in Islam

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the Islamic ruling on picking up stray items and how to handle them if their owner is not found.

Zaid b. Khalid al-Juhani reported that Allah's Messenger was asked about picking up of stray things, whereupon he said: Make announcement of that for one year, but if it is not recognized (by the owner), then recognise its big and strap, then eat it; and if its owner comes, then give that to him. This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Al-Dahhak b. Uthman with the same chain of transmitters but with a slight variation of words.

QUICK LESSONS:
Make an announcement about lost items for 1 year before consuming/using them yourself

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the Islamic ruling on picking up stray items that one finds in public places. It states that one should make an announcement of the item for a period of one year, so that if its owner is looking for it, they can find it. If after a year no one has claimed it, then the person who found it can recognize its big and strap, meaning any identifying features or marks on the item, before consuming or using it themselves. However, if at any point during this time period its original owner comes forward to claim their property then they must be given back what belongs to them without hesitation or delay. This hadith teaches us values such as honesty and responsibility towards other people's belongings as well as being mindful of our own possessions so we do not lose them in public places where someone else may find them instead of us!
