Be lenient when punishing those who are intoxicated

This hadith speaks about the punishment of a drunkard. It is narrated by Ali, who states that if he imposes Hadd on anyone and they die in the course of punishment, he would not mind except in case of a drunkard. If they die, he would pay indemnity for them because the Messenger of Allah has laid down no rule for it. This teaches us that we should be lenient when punishing those who are intoxicated as there is no specific rule set out by Prophet Muhammad regarding this matter. We should also consider paying compensation to those affected by such punishments if necessary.
