QUICK LESSONS:
Understand words beyond their surface meaning

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of understanding words beyond their surface meaning. It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira and Zaid b. Khalid al-Jubani that one should not take a word at face value but rather try to understand its deeper implications. For example, Ibn Shihab mentioned that dafir means rope but this hadith suggests that one should look into what else it could mean in order to gain a better understanding of it. This teaches us to be mindful when we use language as well as when we interpret it so that we can get an accurate picture of what is being said or written.
