Sahih Muslim 1691d (Book 29, Hadith 24) #11532
The Punishment of Stoning

SUMMARY: A man was stoned to death for a crime he committed, and the people who stoned him were witnesses to it.

Ibn Shihab (one of the narrators) said: One who had heard Jabir b. 'Abdullah saying this informed me thus: I was one of those who stoned him. We stoned him at the place of prayer (either that of 'Id or a funeral). When the stones hurt him, he ran away. We caught him in the Harra and stoned him (to death).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the punishment of stoning for a crime that was committed. It is narrated by Ibn Shihab and Jabir b. 'Abdullah, who were both witnesses to the event. The man was caught in the Harra and then stoned to death as punishment for his crime. This hadith teaches us that justice must be served, even if it means punishing someone with death or other severe punishments such as stoning. It also teaches us that we should not take justice into our own hands but rather leave it up to those in authority who are responsible for administering justice according to Islamic law.
