Sahih Muslim 1688c (Book 29, Hadith 15) #11523
Mercy and Punishment

SUMMARY: A woman from the tribe of Makhzum was punished for stealing by having her hand cut off, but her relatives pleaded for mercy and Allah's Messenger showed leniency.

'A'isha reported that a woman from the tribe of Makhzum used to borrow things (from people) and then denied (having taken them). Allah's Apostle commanded her hand to be cut off. Her relatives came to Usama b. Zaid and spoke to him (requesting him to intercede on her behalf). He spoke to Allah's Messenger about her. The rest of the hadith is the same.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show mercy when possible as it is an important part of justice and fairness; Stand up for those who are close to you even if they have done something wrong; Everyone deserves a chance at redemption or forgiveness if they are truly sorry for their actions; Be firm in your punishments for wrongdoings .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a woman who was caught stealing from people in the tribe of Makhzum, so she was sentenced to have her hand cut off as punishment. However, when her relatives heard about this they pleaded with Usama b. Zaid to intercede on their behalf with Allah's Messenger, so he did and showed mercy by not carrying out the sentence. This hadith teaches us that although we should be firm in our punishments for wrongdoings, we should also show mercy when possible as it is an important part of justice and fairness. It also shows us that it is important to stand up for those who are close to us even if they have done something wrong because everyone deserves a chance at redemption or forgiveness if they are truly sorry for their actions.
