Sahih Muslim 1655 (Book 27, Hadith 38) #11402
The Sinfulness of Persisting in Oaths Regarding Family

SUMMARY: Breaking an oath has consequences, and it is more sinful to persist in an oath regarding one's family than to pay the expiation for breaking it.

Hammam b. Munabbih reported: This is what Abu Huraira reported to us from Allah's Messenger , and he narrated a hadith and (one) of them is that Allah's Messenger said: I swear by Allah, it is more sinful in Allah's sight for one of you to persist in an oath regarding his family than payment of its expiation which Allah has imposed upon him (for breaking the oath).

QUICK LESSONS:
Keep your promises no matter what .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the sinfulness of persisting in an oath regarding one's family. An oath is a promise made by someone to do something or not do something, and if they break that promise, they must pay a price known as expiation or kaffara. In this hadith, Allah's Messenger warns us that it is more sinful in Allah's sight for one of you to persist in an oath regarding his family than payment of its expiation which Allah has imposed upon him for breaking the oath. This means that if someone makes a promise to their family and then breaks it, they should not try to make excuses or persist in their broken promise; instead, they should accept responsibility and pay the price set by Allah for breaking their word. This teaches us that we should be honest with our families and keep our promises no matter what because persisting in broken promises can lead us into sinning against God.
