Sahih Muslim 1651c (Book 27, Hadith 24) #11388
Expiating Broken Oaths

SUMMARY: When someone takes an oath and finds something better than that, they should expiate the breaking of the oath and do what is better.

'Adi reported Allah's Messenger as saying: When anyone amongst you takes an oath, but he finds (something) better than that he should expiate (the breaking of the oath), and do that which is better.

QUICK LESSONS:
Think carefully before making any promises or taking any vows so that you can avoid having to break them later on; Keep your word once given; Do a good deed or give charity in order to make up for breaking your oath; Do what is better instead of keeping your promise if you find something more attractive available.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that when we make an oath, we should keep it. However, if we find something better than what we have promised to do, then it is permissible to break our oath and do what is better. We must also expiate for breaking our oath by doing a good deed or giving charity in order to make up for it. This hadith encourages us to think carefully before making any promises or taking any vows so that we can avoid having to break them later on. It also reminds us of the importance of keeping our word once given and not going back on our promises even if there are more attractive options available.
