Breaking Oaths for Better Things

SUMMARY: It is better to break an oath and do something better than it.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger as saying: He who took an oath and then found another thing better than (this) should expiate for the oath (broken) by him and do (the better thing).

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for excellence in all your actions and decisions
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that if we make an oath and then find something better than what we have promised to do, it is permissible to break the oath and do the better thing instead. We must however expiate for breaking the oath by doing some good deeds or giving charity in order to make up for it. This hadith encourages us to always strive for the best in all our actions and decisions. It also reminds us of our responsibility towards fulfilling our promises even if they are not as beneficial as other options available.
