Sahih Muslim 1646a (Book 27, Hadith 1) #11365
The Forbidden Oath of Fathers

SUMMARY: This hadith is about Allah forbidding us to swear by our fathers and how Umar never swore by his father after hearing this.

'Umar b. al-Khattib reported Allah's Messenger as saying: Allah, the Great and Majestic, forbids you to swear by your fathers. Umar said: By Allah. I have never sworn (by my father) since I heard Allah's Messenger forbidding it mentioning them" on my behalf" nor on behalf of someone else.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect your parents
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of respecting one's parents and not swearing by them. It was narrated by 'Umar b. al-Khattib, who reported that Allah's Messenger said that Allah forbids us to swear by our fathers. Umar then said he has never sworn by his father since he heard this commandment from the Prophet, neither on his own behalf nor on behalf of someone else. This hadith teaches us to respect our parents and not take their name in vain or use it as an oath for something we are unsure of or do not believe in fully. We should also remember that even though we may be tempted to use their name as a way to prove something, it is still forbidden according to Islamic teachings and should be avoided at all costs.
