The Inappropriateness of Taking Back Gifts

SUMMARY: It is not proper to take back a gift that has been given.

Abdullah b. Tawus reported on the authority of his father who reported from Ibn Abas (Allah be pleased with them) who reported from Allah's Messenger 'may peace be upon him) that he said: One who gets back his gift is like a dog which vomits and then swallows that vomit.

QUICK LESSONS:
Think before giving away something as once it has been given away you should not take it back no matter how much you may want or need it again; Show gratitude for any gifts received; Do not take gifts for granted or expect them in return; Follow good manners & etiquette when giving/receiving gifts.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the inappropriateness of taking back a gift that has been given. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used an analogy to explain this concept; he said that someone who takes back their gift is like a dog which vomits and then swallows it again. This analogy implies that taking back a gift is disgusting and should not be done as it goes against good manners and etiquette. Furthermore, this hadith teaches us to think before we give something away as once it has been given away, we should not take it back no matter how much we may want or need it again. We must also remember to always show gratitude for any gifts received and never take them for granted or expect them in return.
