Sahih Muslim 1622d (Book 24, Hadith 11) #11285
The Futility of Expecting Something in Return for Charity

SUMMARY: Giving charity and expecting something in return is like a dog eating its own vomit.

Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with them) reported: I heard Allah's Messenger say: The similitude of one who gives a charity and then gets it back is like that of a dog which vomits and then eats its vomit.

QUICK LESSONS:
Give charity without expecting anything back in return.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith, narrated by Ibn Abbas, speaks about the futility of expecting something in return for giving charity. It compares this act to that of a dog which vomits and then eats its vomit again. This comparison implies that it is an act which is not only futile but also disgusting and repulsive. It teaches us that when we give charity, we should do so with the intention of pleasing Allah alone and not expect anything from anyone else in return. We should be content with whatever reward Allah has promised us for our good deeds without expecting any worldly gain or recognition from people around us.
