Sahih Muslim 1621c (Book 24, Hadith 7) #11281
Donating in the Path of Allah

SUMMARY: Umar donated a horse in the path of Allah and then found it being sold, but Allah's Messenger advised him not to buy it back.

Salim reported from Ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with them) that 'Umar donated a horse in the path of Allah and then found it being sold, and he decided to buy that. He asked Allah's Apostle about it, whereupon Allah's Messenger said: Umar, do not get back what you gave as charity.

QUICK LESSONS:
Donate generously for God's sake without expecting anything in return

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about donating in the path of Allah. It tells us that when we give something away as charity, we should not expect to get it back. Umar was willing to donate a horse for the sake of God and when he found out that someone else had bought it, he wanted to buy it back. However, Prophet Muhammad advised him against doing so as this would defeat the purpose of giving charity in the first place. This hadith teaches us that when we give something away for God's sake, we should do so with an open heart and without expecting anything in return. We should also be content with whatever outcome comes our way after giving charity and not try to take advantage or benefit from our own donation.
