Sahih Muslim 1620c (Book 24, Hadith 3) #11277
The Inappropriateness of Taking Back Charity

SUMMARY: Charity should not be taken back, as it is like a dog eating its own vomit.

Zaid b. Aslam reported on the authority of his father that 'Umar (Allah be pleased with him) donated a horse in the path of Allah. He found that it had languished in the hand of its possessor, and he was a man of meagre resources He (Hadrat 'Umar) intended to buy it. He came to Allah's Messenger and made a mention of that to him, whereupon he said: Don't buy that even if you get it for a dirham for he who gets back the charity is like a dog which swallows its vomit.

QUICK LESSONS:
Give generously without expecting anything in return

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of charity and giving to those in need. It is narrated by Zaid b. Aslam on the authority of his father that Umar donated a horse in the path of Allah, but found that it had languished in the hand of its possessor who was a man with meagre resources. Umar wanted to buy it back, but Allah's Messenger advised him not to do so even if he got it for a dirham because whoever gets back their charity is like a dog which swallows its vomit - something which is disgusting and inappropriate. This hadith teaches us that we should give generously without expecting anything in return, as taking back our charity would be inappropriate and unbecoming behaviour for believers. We should also remember that whatever we give away will come back to us from Allah's bounty and mercy - whether directly or indirectly - so there is no need to take our charity back from those who are less fortunate than us.
