Sahih Muslim 1610b (Book 22, Hadith 172) #11245
The Consequences of Taking Without Right

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the consequences of taking something without right, and how Allah's Messenger warned against it.

Sa'id b. Zaid b. 'Amr b. Nufail (Allah be pleased with them) reported that Arwi (bint Uwais) disputed with him (in regard to a part of the land) of his house. He said: Leave it and take off your claim from it, for I heard Allah's Messenger as saying: He who took a span of land without his right would be made to wear around his neck seven earths on the Day of Resurrection. He (Sa'id b. Zaid) said: O Allah, make her blind if she has told a lie and make her grave in her house. He (the narrator) said: I saw her blind groping (her way) by touching the walls and saying: The curse of Sa'id b. Zaid has hit me. And it so happened that as she was walking in her house, she passed by a well in her house and fell therein and that be- came her grave.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect others property rights and do not take anything from anyone without their permission or consent .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the consequences of taking something without right, which Allah's Messenger warned against. It tells the story of Sa'id b. Zaid who was in a dispute with Arwi over a part of his house land, to which she had no right to claim ownership over. Sa'id then reminded her that he heard Allah's Messenger say that whoever takes a span of land without his right would be made to wear around his neck seven earths on the Day of Resurrection as punishment for their wrong-doing. He then prayed for her blindness if she was lying and for her grave to be in her house, both coming true when she fell into a well in her house while walking blind due to being cursed by Sa’id’s prayer and became buried there as well as punishment for trying to take what wasn't hers in the first place. This hadith teaches us that we should not take anything from anyone without their permission or consent because it will have serious consequences on us on Judgment Day if we do so wrongfully or unjustly .
