Sahih Muslim 1602 (Book 22, Hadith 152) #11225
Freeing Slaves in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) bought a slave and freed him, and from then on asked everyone who pledged allegiance to him if they were free or not.

Jabir (Allah be pleased with him) reported: There came a slave and pledged allegiance to Allah's Apostle on migration; he (the Holy Prophet) did not know that he was a slave. Then there came his master and demanded him back, whereupon Allah's Apostle said: Sell him to me. And he bought him for two black slaves, and he did not afterwards take allegiance from anyone until he had asked him whether he was a slave (or a free man)

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of freeing slaves in Islam. It tells us that when the Prophet Muhammad PBUH was approached by a slave who wanted to pledge allegiance to him, he did not know that he was a slave. When his master came to reclaim him, the Prophet PBUH offered to buy him for two black slaves so that he could be freed. From then on, whenever someone wanted to pledge allegiance, the Prophet PBUH would ask them if they were free or not before accepting their oath of loyalty. This hadith teaches us that slavery is wrong and should be abolished whenever possible; it also shows us how much respect and value the Prophet PBUH placed on freedom for all people regardless of their social status or background.
