Sahih Muslim 1588a (Book 22, Hadith 105) #11184
Payment by Like-for-Like Goods

SUMMARY: Payment should be made for goods with the same type of goods, and any addition or demand for addition is considered usury.

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger as saying: Dates are to be paid for by dates, wheat by wheat, barley by barley, salt by salt, like for like, payment being made on the spot. He who made an addition or demanded an addition, in fact, dealt in usury except in case where their classes differ.

QUICK LESSONS:
Paying like-for-like goods without adding anything extra or asking for something extra in return
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that when exchanging goods, payment should be made with the same type of good. For example, if someone wants to buy dates, they should pay with dates instead of money. Additionally, it is forbidden to add anything extra or ask for something extra in exchange as this would be considered usury which is not allowed in Islam. Usury means taking interest on a loan and it is prohibited because it causes people to become financially burdened and can lead to poverty. Therefore, Muslims are encouraged to exchange items like-for-like without adding anything extra or asking for something extra in return.
