The Prohibition of Selling Gold and Silver at Equal Prices

SUMMARY: Do not sell gold and silver of the same quality for the same price.

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger as saying: Do not sell gold for gold and silver for silver weight for weight or of the same quality.

QUICK LESSONS:
Exchange goods fairly without cheating anyone out from their money or goods they are trading away .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prohibition of selling gold and silver at equal prices. It is narrated by Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, who was a companion of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He reported that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said “Do not sell gold for gold and silver for silver weight for weight or of the same quality”. This means that it is prohibited to exchange two items with equal value, such as exchanging one ounce of gold with another ounce of gold or one ounce of silver with another ounce of silver. Instead, it should be exchanged in a way where there is an unequal exchange between them, such as exchanging one ounce of gold with two ounces or more ounces than that amount in order to make sure there is no injustice done to either party involved in the transaction. This hadith teaches us about fairness when dealing with others in business transactions and encourages us to be just when trading goods so that no one gets cheated out from their money or goods they are trading away.
