Prohibition of Trade in Wine

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that when the verses of Sura Baqara pertaining to Riba were revealed, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) went out to the mosque and prohibited the trade in wine.

'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported: When the concluding verses of Sura Baqara pertaining to Riba were revealed, Allah's Messenger went out to the mosque and he forbade the trade in wine.
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ - وَاللَّفْظُ لأَبِي كُرَيْبٍ - قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ أَخْبَرَنَا وَقَالَ الآخَرَانِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ لَمَّا أُنْزِلَتِ الآيَاتُ مِنْ آخِرِ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ فِي الرِّبَا - قَالَتْ - خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَحَرَّمَ التِّجَارَةَ فِي الْخَمْرِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a revelation from Allah that was sent down to Prophet Muhammad PBUH. The revelation was about Riba, which is an Arabic term for usury or interest on loans. When this revelation was sent down, Prophet Muhammad PBUH went out to the mosque and forbade people from trading in wine. This means that he prohibited people from buying and selling wine as it was against Islamic teachings at that time. The main idea behind this hadith is that Muslims should follow Islamic teachings even if they are difficult or inconvenient for them as it will bring them closer to Allah and help them lead a better life here on earth as well as in the hereafter.
