The Dangers of Keeping Dogs as Pets

SUMMARY: Keeping a dog as a pet will reduce one's deeds, except if it is kept for the purpose of watching over fields or herds.

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger as saying: He who kept a dog would lose out of his deeds equal to one qirat every day. except (one kept) for watching the field or herd.

QUICK LESSONS:
Think twice before getting a pet dog and consider other alternatives such as cats or birds instead

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith from Abu Huraira warns against keeping dogs as pets. It states that anyone who keeps a dog will lose out on their deeds equal to one qirat every day, unless it is kept for the purpose of watching over fields or herds. A qirat is an ancient unit of measurement and its exact value is unknown today. However, this hadith implies that keeping a dog can be detrimental to one's spiritual life and should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. Therefore, Muslims should think twice before getting a pet dog and consider other alternatives such as cats or birds instead.
