Sahih Muslim 1556a (Book 22, Hadith 20) #11105
Charity as a Solution for Debt

SUMMARY: A man was in debt and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised people to give him charity, but it was not enough to pay off his debt. The Prophet then told the creditors to take what they find and that they would have nothing but alms.

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) reported that in the time of Allah's Messenger a man suffered loss in fruits he had bought and his debt increased; so Allah's Messenger told (the people) to give him charity and they gave him charity, but that was not enough to pay the debt in full, whereupon Allah's Messenger said to his creditors: " Take what you find, you will have nothing but alms.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about charity being a solution for debt. It is narrated by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri who reported that in the time of Allah's Messenger, a man suffered loss in fruits he had bought and his debt increased. In order to help this man out of his financial difficulty, Allah's Messenger asked people to give him charity and they did so, however it was not enough to pay off his entire debt. Therefore, Allah's Messenger told the creditors that all they could take from this man was what they found and nothing more than alms. This hadith teaches us about the importance of giving charity as well as helping those who are in need financially or otherwise. It also shows us how generous our beloved Prophet Muhammad was towards others even if it meant sacrificing something of his own or asking others for help on behalf of someone else.
