Sahih Muslim 1551f (Book 22, Hadith 6) #11091
Expulsion of Jews from Hijaz and Khaibar

SUMMARY: The Jews were expelled from the land of Hijaz by Umar al-Khattab and when the Muslims conquered Khaibar, they decided to expel them from there as well.

Ibn Umar reported that 'Umar b. al-Khattab (Allah be pleased with him) expelled the Jews and Christians from the land of Hijaz, and that when Allah's Messenger conquered Khaibar he made up his mind to expel the Jews from it (the territory of Khaibar) because, when that land was conquered, it came under the sway of Allah, that of His Messenger and that of the Muslims. The jews asked Allah's Messenger to let them continue there on the condition that they would work on it, and would get in turn half of the fruit (of the trees), whereupon Allah's Messenger said: We would let you continue there so long as we will desire. So they continued (to cultivate the lands) till 'Umar externed them to Taima' and Ariha (two villages in Arabia, but out of Hijaz).

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect people regardless of their religion or beliefs; Follow laws set by authorities; Live peacefully with others without prejudice; Treat everyone fairly; Be just in your decisions.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how the Jews were expelled from the land of Hijaz by Umar al-Khattab. When Allah's Messenger conquered Khaibar, he made up his mind to expel them as well because it was now under the sway of Allah, His Messenger and that of the Muslims. The jews asked Allah's Messenger to let them stay on condition that they would work on it and get half of its fruit in return. However, Allah's Messenger said that they could stay only for as long as he desired so eventually 'Umar externed them to two villages in Arabia called Taima' and Ariha which were outside Hijaz. This hadith teaches us about justice and fairness towards others regardless of their religion or beliefs. It also shows us how important it is for a society to be united under one law or authority so everyone can live peacefully together without any discrimination or prejudice against each other based on their faith or beliefs.
