Obeying Allah and His Messenger is Better

SUMMARY: A woman was divorced by her husband and the Prophet (PBUH) advised her to marry Usama b. Zaid, even though she did not approve of him, as it was better for her to obey Allah and His Messenger.

Fatima bint Qais (Allah be pleased with her) reported that her husband divorced her with three, pronouncements and Allah's Messenger ﷺ made no provision for her lodging and maintenance allowance. She (further said): Allah's Messenger ﷺ said to me: When your period of 'Idda is over, inform me. So I informed him. (By that time) Mu'awiya, Abu Jahm and Usama b. Zaid had given her the proposal of marriage. Allah's Messenger ﷺ said: So far as Mu'awiya is concerned, he is a poor man without any property. So far as Abu Jahm is concerned, he is a great beater of women, but Usama b. Zaid. She pointed with her hand (that she did not approve of the idea of marrying) Usama. But Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Obedience to Allah and obedience to His Messenger is better for thee. She said: So I married him, and I became an object of envy.
وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبِي، الْجَهْمِ بْنِ صُخَيْرٍ الْعَدَوِيِّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتَ قَيْسٍ، تَقُولُ إِنَّ زَوْجَهَا طَلَّقَهَا ثَلاَثًا فَلَمْ يَجْعَلْ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ سُكْنَى وَلاَ نَفَقَةً قَالَتْ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ‏"‏ إِذَا حَلَلْتِ فَآذِنِينِي ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَآذَنْتُهُ فَخَطَبَهَا مُعَاوِيَةُ وَأَبُو جَهْمٍ وَأُسَامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ‏"‏ أَمَّا مُعَاوِيَةُ فَرَجُلٌ تَرِبٌ لاَ مَالَ لَهُ وَأَمَّا أَبُو جَهْمٍ فَرَجُلٌ ضَرَّابٌ لِلنِّسَاءِ وَلَكِنْ أُسَامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَقَالَتْ بِيَدِهَا هَكَذَا أُسَامَةُ أُسَامَةُ فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ‏"‏ طَاعَةُ اللَّهِ وَطَاعَةُ رَسُولِهِ خَيْرٌ لَكِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَتْ فَتَزَوَّجْتُهُ فَاغْتَبَطْتُ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of obedience to Allah and His Messenger. It tells us that when a woman is divorced by her husband, she should seek advice from the Prophet Muhammad PBUH on whom she should marry next. In this case, Fatima bint Qais was proposed marriage by three men - Mu'awiya who was poor without any property; Abu Jahm who was known for beating women; and Usama bin Zaid whom Fatima did not approve of. However, the Prophet PBUH advised her to marry Usama bin Zaid as it would be better for her in terms of obeying Allah and His Messenger. This hadith teaches us that we must always strive to obey Allah's commands even if we do not understand them or agree with them at first because He knows what is best for us in our lives.
