Sahih Muslim 1476a (Book 18, Hadith 31) #10819
Seeking Permission in Marriage

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) seeking permission from his wives to visit other wives, and how this was revealed in the Quran.

'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Allah's Messenger sought our permission when he had a (turn to spend) a day with (one of his wives) amongst us (whereas he wanted to visit his other wives too). It was after this that this verse was revealed: " Thou mayest put off whom thou pleasest of them, and take for thee whom thou pleasest" (xxxiii. 5). Mu'adha said to her: What did you say to Allah's Messenger when he sought your permission? She said: I used to say: If it had the option in this I would not have (allowed anyone) to have precedence over me.

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek consent before taking any action

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of seeking permission before taking any action. It is narrated by 'A'isha that Allah's Messenger sought her permission when he wanted to spend a day with one of his wives. This was followed by the revelation of a verse in the Quran which states that one can put off whom they please and take for themselves whom they please. Mu'adha asked 'A'isha what she said when Allah's Messenger sought her permission and she replied that if it had been an option she would not have allowed anyone to have precedence over her. This shows us that even though it is permissible for a husband to visit other wives, it should be done after seeking their consent first as a sign of respect and courtesy towards them. It also teaches us about humility as even though Prophet Muhammad was given divine revelations he still chose to seek permission from his wife before taking any action.
