Sahih Muslim 1472a (Book 18, Hadith 22) #10810
Three Divorces During Prophet Muhammad's Lifetime

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the pronouncement of three divorces during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Abu Bakr and two years of Umar's caliphate being treated as one. Umar (RA) imposed this rule due to people hastening in the matter.

Ibn 'Abbas (Allah be pleased with them) reported that the (pronouncement) of three divorces during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger and that of Abu Bakr and two years of the caliphate of Umar (Allah be pleased with him) (was treated) as one. But Umar b. Khattab (Allah be pleased with him) said: Verily the people have begun to hasten in the matter in which they are required to observe respite. So if we had imposed this upon them, and he imposed it upon them.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about how during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) and Abu Bakr and two years of Umar's caliphate, three divorces were treated as one. This was done because people were hastening in matters related to divorce which could have caused harm to them or their families. Umar ibn Khattab(RA) imposed this rule so that people would take time before making such a decision. This hadith teaches us that we should think carefully before making any decisions that can affect our lives or those around us negatively. We should also be patient when it comes to matters related to family life as it can have long-term effects on our lives if not handled properly.
