Sahih Muslim 1458b (Book 17, Hadith 49) #10753
Proficiency in All Things

SUMMARY: Allah has commanded us to be proficient in all our actions and to take care when killing or slaughtering animals so as not to cause them unnecessary suffering.

A hadith like this is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira.
وَحَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، وَعَبْدُ الأَعْلَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ، وَعَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ، قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، أَمَّا ابْنُ مَنْصُورٍ فَقَالَ عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، وَأَمَّا، عَبْدُ الأَعْلَى فَقَالَ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، أَوْ عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، وَقَالَ، زُهَيْرٌ عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، أَوْ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، أَحَدُهُمَا أَوْ كِلاَهُمَا عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، وَقَالَ، عَمْرٌو حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، مَرَّةً عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، وَأَبِي، سَلَمَةَ وَمَرَّةً عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، أَوْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ وَمَرَّةً عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي، هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ‏.‏ بِمِثْلِ حَدِيثِ مَعْمَرٍ

This hadith is narrated by Abu Huraira on the authority of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It teaches us that Allah has commanded us to be proficient in all our actions and that we should take care when killing or slaughtering animals so as not to cause them unnecessary suffering. We should sharpen our blades before using them for killing or slaughtering animals so that they do not suffer unnecessarily during the process. This hadith also teaches us about being mindful of how we treat other living creatures and being compassionate towards them even when taking their lives for food or other purposes.
