Sahih Muslim 1455a (Book 17, Hadith 39) #10743
The Importance of Fosterage

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the importance of considering who your brothers are due to fosterage, as it is through hunger in infancy.

'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported: Allah's Messenger visited me when a man was sitting near me, and he seemed to disapprove of that. And I saw signs of anger on his face and I said: Messenger of Allah, he is my brother by fosterage, whereupon he said: Consider who your brothers are because of fosterage since fosterage is through hunger (i. e. in infancy).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the importance of considering who your brothers are due to fosterage. Fosterage is when a child is nursed by someone other than their biological mother, and this hadith emphasizes that this relationship should be taken into account when determining who one's brothers are. It also implies that hunger in infancy can lead to strong bonds between people, and that these bonds should be respected and cherished. The Prophet Muhammad was teaching us here about the importance of good character and how it can help us build strong relationships with others. He was also emphasizing the need for us to recognize our family ties even if they don't come from our biological parents or siblings. By doing so, we can create a stronger bond with those around us which will benefit everyone involved.
