Sahih Muslim 1445a (Book 17, Hadith 4) #10708
Granting Permission to Family Members

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of granting permission to family members, even if they are not immediate relatives.

'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Aflah, the brother of Abu'l-Qu'ais, who was her uncle by reason of fosterage, came, and asked her permission (to enter the house) after seclusion (Hijab) was instituted. I refused to admit him. When Allah's Messenger came, I informed him what I had done. He commanded me to grant him permission (as the brother of her foster-father was also her uncle).

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect your extended family members and grant them access when they ask for it.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of granting permission to family members, even if they are not immediate relatives. 'A'isha was asked for permission by her uncle through fosterage, Aflah, but she refused him entry into her house. When Allah's Messenger heard this he commanded her to grant him permission as he was still related to her through fosterage. This hadith teaches us that we should be respectful and kind towards our extended family members and grant them access when they ask for it. We should also remember that our extended family can be just as important as our immediate family and treat them with respect accordingly.
