Sahih al-Bukhari 1109 (Book 18, Hadith 29) #1069
Combining Prayers During Travel

SUMMARY: This hadith explains how Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and Abdullah bin 'Umar used to combine the Maghrib and Isha prayers when they were in a hurry during a journey.

Narrated Az-Zuhri: Salim told me, "'Abdullah bin 'Umar said, 'I saw Allah's Messenger delaying the Maghrib prayer till he offered it along with the 'Isha prayer whenever he was in a hurry during the journey'. " Salim said, "Abdullah bin 'Umar used to do the same whenever he was in a hurry during the journey. After making the call for Iqama, for the Maghrib prayer he used to offer three rak'at and then perform Taslim. After waiting for a short while, he would pronounce the Iqama for the 'Isha' prayer and offer two rak'at and perform Taslim. He never prayed any Nawafil in between the two prayers or after the 'Isha' prayers till he got up in the middle of the night (for Tahajjud prayer)".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Allah's commands even while travelling or busy with other matters

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains how Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companion Abdullah bin 'Umar used to combine the Maghrib and Isha prayers when they were in a hurry during a journey. When travelling, it is permissible for Muslims to combine their prayers if they are short on time or are unable to perform them separately due to certain circumstances. In this case, after making the call for Iqama for the Maghrib prayer, three rak'ats would be offered followed by Taslim. After waiting for a short while, Iqama would be pronounced again for Isha prayer with two rak'ats being offered followed by Taslim. No Nawafil was prayed between these two prayers or after Isha until he got up in the middle of the night for Tahajjud prayer. This hadith teaches us that we should not neglect our religious obligations even when we are busy or travelling as Allah has given us permission to make adjustments accordingly so that we can still fulfill our duties as Muslims without compromising on our faith.
