Sahih Muslim 1419a (Book 16, Hadith 75) #10610
Seeking Consent Before Marriage

SUMMARY: A woman who is not married, divorced or a widow must not be married without her consent and a virgin must not be married without her permission.

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger as having said: A woman without a husband (or divorced or a widow) must not be married until she is consulted, and a virgin must not be married until her permission is sought. They asked the Prophet of Allah : How her (virgin's) consent can be solicited? He (the Holy Prophet) said: That she keeps silence.

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek women's consent before marriage
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of seeking consent before marriage. It is important to ensure that the woman being married has given her permission and is comfortable with the decision. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that if a woman was already divorced or widowed, she should be consulted before being remarried. For virgins, it was taught that their permission can be sought through their silence. This hadith teaches us to respect women’s autonomy in marriage decisions and to make sure they are comfortable with any decisions made about them.
