Sahih Muslim 1408d (Book 16, Hadith 42) #10577
Forbidden Marriages

SUMMARY: It is forbidden to marry a woman and her father's sister or mother's sister.

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah's Messenger forbade a person to combine in marriage a woman and her father's sister, and a woman and her mother's sister. Ibn Shihab said: So we regarded the paternal aunt of her (wife's) father and the maternal aunt of her (wife's) father at the same level.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect family relationships when considering marriage options

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that it is forbidden in Islam to marry a woman and her father’s sister or mother’s sister. This means that if someone has an aunt on their father’s side, they cannot marry them. Similarly, if someone has an aunt on their mother’s side, they cannot marry them either. The Prophet Muhammad forbade this type of marriage as it would be too close of a relationship between the two people who are getting married. It is important to remember that marriage should be based on love and respect for each other, not just because of family ties.
