Sahih Muslim 1406b (Book 16, Hadith 23) #10558
Temporary Marriage During Victory of Mecca

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) allowing his companions to contract temporary marriage with women during the Victory of Mecca, and how one of them was able to do so.

Rabi' b. Sabra reported that his father went on an expedition with Allah's Messenger during the Victory of Mecca, and we stayed there for fifteen days (i. e. for thirteen full days and a day and a night), and Allah's Messenger permitted us to contract temporary marriage with women. So I and another person of my tribe went out, and I was more handsome than he, whereas he was almost ugly. Each one of us had a cloaks, My cloak was worn out, whereas the cloak of my cousin was quite new. As we reached the lower or the upper side of Mecca, we came across a young woman like a young smart long-necked she-camel. We said: Is it possible that one of us may contract temporary marriage with you? She said: What will you give me as a dower? Each one of us spread his cloak. She began to cast a glance on both the persons. My companion also looked at her when she was casting a glance at her side and he said: This cloak of his is worn out, whereas my cloak is quite new. She, however, said twice or thrice: There is no harm in (accepting) this cloak (the old one). So I contracted temporary marriage with her, and I did not come out (of this) until Allah's Messenger declared it forbidden.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be honest when dealing with people regardless if you are trying to win someone over or not .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a situation that occurred during the Victory of Mecca when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) allowed his companions to contract temporary marriage with women. A companion named Rabi’ b. Sabra and another person from his tribe went out in search for a woman they could marry temporarily. They came across a young woman who asked them what they would give her as dower or mahr in exchange for her hand in marriage. Both men spread their cloaks on the ground and she chose Rabi’ b. Sabra's cloak even though it was worn out while his companion's cloak was new because she found it more attractive than the other one. After this incident, Prophet Muhammad declared this practice forbidden or haram soon after this incident took place.

This hadith teaches us that we should always be honest and truthful when dealing with people regardless if we are trying to win someone over or not because Allah will reward us for our honesty even if it does not seem like it at first glance as seen by how Rabi’ b.'s honesty paid off despite having an old cloak compared to his companion's new one which ultimately led him to win over the woman he wanted to marry temporarily instead of his companion who had a better looking cloak than him but lacked honesty which cost him dearly in this situation as he did not get what he wanted due to lack thereof . We should also remember that Allah knows best and whatever He has planned for us will come true no matter what obstacles may stand in our way so we should never lose hope no matter how difficult things may seem at times because Allah will always provide us with solutions if we put our trust in Him alone .
