Sahih Muslim 1404a (Book 16, Hadith 13) #10548
Prohibition of Castration and Permission to Contract Temporary Marriage

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the prohibition of castration and permission to contract temporary marriage for a stipulated period.

Abdullah (b. Mas'ud) reported: We were on an expedition with Allah's Messenger and we had no women with us. We said: Should we not have ourselves castrated? He (the Holy Prophet) forbade us to do so He then granted us permission that we should contract temporary marriage for a stipulated period giving her a garment, and 'Abdullah then recited this verse: 'Those who believe do not make unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful for you, and do not transgress. Allah does not like transgressors" (al-Qur'an, v. 87).

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey Allah's commands, be mindful of one's actions

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prohibition of castrating oneself, which was a practice in some cultures at that time, and the permission to contract temporary marriage for a stipulated period. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ forbade his companions from castrating themselves as it was considered an unlawful act in Islam. He then granted them permission to engage in temporary marriages with women, provided that they give her a garment as part of the agreement. The verse Abdullah recited from Surah al-Ma’idah further emphasizes this point by reminding believers not to make unlawful what Allah has made lawful for them and not to transgress His limits. This hadith teaches us that we should be mindful of our actions and not go beyond what Allah has prescribed for us, as He does not like those who transgress His limits.
