Sahih Muslim 1361b (Book 15, Hadith 520) #10455
The Sacredness of Medina

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of Medina and its inhabitants, and how it should be respected as much as Mecca.

Nafi' b. Jubair reported that Marwan b. al-Hakam (Allah be pleased with him) addressed people and made mention of Mecca and its inhabitants and its sacredness, but he made no mention of Medina, its inhabitants and its sacredness. Rafi' b. Khadij called to him and said: What is this that I hear you making mention of Mecca and its inhabitants and its sacredness, but you did not make mention of Medina and its inhabitants and its sacredness, while the Messenger of Allah has also declared sacred (the area) between its two lava lands (Medina)? And (we have record of this) with us written on Khaulani parchment. If you like, I can read it out to you. Thereupon Marwan became silent, and then Said: I too have heard some part of it.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of respecting and honoring the city of Medina and its inhabitants. It was narrated by Nafi' b. Jubair that Marwan b. al-Hakam addressed people but did not mention Medina or its inhabitants in his speech despite it being a sacred place according to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . Rafi' b. Khadij then called out to him saying that he should also mention Medina since it was declared sacred by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . He then produced a parchment written on animal skin which contained this information from Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . Upon hearing this, Marwan became silent and admitted that he had heard some part of it before but did not mention it in his speech due to forgetfulness or negligence. This hadith teaches us the importance of respecting all places which have been declared sacred by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , regardless if they are big cities like Mecca or small towns like Medina, as well as their respective inhabitants who live there too!
