Sahih Muslim 1249 (Book 15, Hadith 233) #10168
Difference of Opinion Regarding Two Mut'as

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the difference of opinion between Ibn Abbas and Ibn Zubair regarding two Mut'as (benefits, Tamattu in Hajj and temporary marriage with women). Jibir reported that they practiced these during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) but 'Umar forbade them to do so.

Abd Nadra reported: While I was in the company of Jibir, a person came and said: There is difference of opinion among Ibn Abbas and Ibn Zubair about two Mut'as (benefits, Tamattu in Hajj and temporary marriage with women), whereupon jibir said: We have been doing this during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (way peace be upon him), and then 'Umar forbade us to do so, and we never resorted to them.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses a difference of opinion between two companions of Prophet Muhammad - Ibn Abbas and Ibn Zubair - regarding two benefits or mut’as. The first benefit was called tamattu which was related to performing hajj pilgrimage while the second one was related to temporary marriage with women. Jibir reported that they practiced these during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad but 'Umar forbade them to do so after his death. This hadith teaches us that we should respect differences in opinions among people even if it is between companions of Prophet Muhammad as long as it does not contradict Islamic teachings or laws. We should also respect those who are in authority over us and follow their orders even if we don’t agree with them completely as long as it does not go against Islamic teachings or laws.
