Sahih Muslim 1240b (Book 15, Hadith 218) #10153
Changing Intention from Hajj to Umra

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) allowed people to change their intention of Hajj to Umra after four days of Dhu'l-Hijja.

Ibn 'Abbas (Allah be pleased with them) 'is reported to have said: The Messenger of Allah put on Ihram for Hajj. When four days of Dhu'l-Hijja were over, he led the dawn prayer, and when the prayer was complete, he said: He who wants to change it to Umra may do so.

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for excellence in worship
EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ allowed people who had the intention of performing the pilgrimage of Hajj to change it and perform the lesser pilgrimage of Umra instead. This is because both pilgrimages are considered acts of worship in Islam and can be done at any time during the year. However, if one has already started their journey for Hajj, they must complete it before changing their intention. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive for excellence in our worship and that Allah is Most Merciful and will accept whatever we do with sincerity.
