Sahih Muslim 1216c (Book 15, Hadith 154) #10089
Performing Umra and Hajj in the Same Year

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the process of performing Umra and Hajj in the same year, and how to go about it.

Musa b. Nafi reported: I came to Mecca as a Mutamattil for Umra (performing Umra first and then putting off Ihram and again entering into the state of Ihram for Hajj) four days before the day of Tarwiya (i. e. on the 4th of Dhu'l-Hijja). Thereupon the people said: Now yours is the Hajj of the Meccans. I went to 'Ata' b. Abi Rabah and asked his religious verdict. Ata' said: Jabir b. 'Abdullah al'Ansari (Allah be pleased with them) narrated to me that he performed Hajj with the Messenger of Allah in the year when he took sacrificial animals with him (ie during the 10th year of Hijra known as the Farewell Pilgrimage) and they had put on Ihram for Hajj only (as Mufrid). The Messenger of Allah said: Put off Ihram and circumambulate the House, and (run) between al-Safa and al-Marwa, and get your hair cut and stay as non-Muhrims. When it was the day of Tarwiya, then put on Ihram for Hajj and make Ihram for Mut'a (you had put on Ihram for Hajj, but take it off after performing Umra and then again put on Ihram for Hajj). They said: How should we make it Mut'a although we entered upon Ihram in the name of Hajj? He said: Do whatever I command you to do. Had I not brought sacrificial animals with me, I would have done as I have commanded you to do. But it is not permissible for me to put off Ihram till the sacrifice is offered. Then they also did accordingly.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow rules set by Allah SWT through His beloved messenger Muhammad ﷺ . Put off ihrams after circumambulating around Kaaba, running between Safa & Marwa hills, getting hair cut & staying as non-Muhrims until it is time for Tarwiya when one should again put on ihrmam both Mut’a & hajj even though initially entered upon ihrmam in name of only hajj . Offer sacrifices if applicable .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains how to perform Umra and Hajj in the same year. It is narrated by Musa b. Nafi that he came to Mecca as a Mutamattil for Umra four days before the day of Tarwiya which is on the 4th of Dhu'l-Hijja. He asked 'Ata' b. Abi Rabah for his religious verdict who then told him that Jabir b. 'Abdullah al'Ansari narrated to him that he performed Hajj with Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during his Farewell Pilgrimage when they had put on Ihram for Hajj only as Mufrid. The Prophet ﷺ said they should put off their Ihram after circumambulating around Kaaba, running between Safa and Marwa hills, getting their hair cut and staying as non-Muhrims until it was time for Tarwiya when they should again put on Ihram for both Mut’a and Hajj even though they initially entered upon Ihram in name of only Hajj because if he did not bring sacrificial animals with him then he would have done what he commanded them to do himself too but since there were sacrificial animals present so it was not permissible for him to take off his own Ihram till sacrifice was offered first. Thus this hadith teaches us about performing both rituals together while following all rules set by Allah SWT through His beloved messenger Muhammad ﷺ .
